The addition of a new living space and covered deck to an existing bach

The existing bach had poor connection with its site. Rather than extend the width of the existing bach for the new living space, a decision was made to create a new living space which opened onto a new covered deck. Extensive bi-folding doors to the existing dining and new living spaces allow the covered deck to function as an extension of both spaces with immediate connection the outdoors.

With existing decks to the rear of the bach (morning sun) and an existing north facing patio the covered deck provides a vital third option for outdoor living with summer shade and winter cover.

With a limited budget the existing roof form and exterior load bearing wall was retained, with a new gable form providing a frontage to the bach. Simple, durable finishes were used inside and out.

The addition of double glazed joinery, improved insulation, a log burner and natural ventilation improve comfort year round.
